Mothers give us the gift of life; but it’s their gift of love, wisdom and care that makes us who we are. Moms, grandmas, aunts and mentors are our biggest fans — working tirelessly, praying fervently and loving us deeply. Yet we often neglect to express how much they are appreciated and loved, let alone acknowledge all they do. Mother’s Day is a great reminder for us to set aside time to honor the women God has gifted us. Here are 20 ways to do that.

20 Ways to Honor the Women Who Make Your Mother’s Day So Special

While candles, cards, flowers and heartfelt posts on Instagram are always a win, below are a few more ideas to make the women in our lives feel special and loved this Mother’s Day. Keep in mind, the goal isn’t perfection. When it comes to moms, it really is the thought, effort, genuineness and creativity that counts.

1. Begin the day with hugging and telling her, “I love you.”

2. Draw and frame a portrait of the family. Remember it’s not about artistic talent or perfection; it’s about creating a special keepsake for her.

3. Write a poem or letter to her. For younger kids, have them complete the sentence, “I love you because …” or “5 things I love about you are. …” Read it to her on Mother’s Day.

4. Serve her breakfast in bed with all of her favorites, homemade or store-bought. Bonus points if you let her sleep in and don’t leave the cleanup for her!

5. Paint river rocks to put in her garden or use as bookends or paperweights.

6. Recreate a scene from her favorite show or book. Act it out for her or take a picture and frame it.

7. Put together a pampering basket with items like nail polish, face masks, soothing eye pads, scrubs and bubble bath. Then give her time to relax and enjoy some time to herself.

8. Give her the gift of doing her chores or doing yardwork for a day, or even longer!

9. Do one of her favorite things. Play a game, go to the beach, get coffee, go hiking. … It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it is something that mom loves to do.

10. Write down on paper, index cards or sticky notes what you love about her. Post your thoughts around the house or hide them throughout her car or purse.

11. For kids old enough to drive, take her on a coffee date or to lunch. The gift of time with you is always a win.

12. No time to go out? Buy her a new coffee tumbler, such as the Awana Stainless Steel Tumbler, and include a gift card for her favorite coffee shop.

13. Find wildflowers to put in a bouquet. Just don’t pick them from a neighbor’s yard without asking first!

14. Pound nails into a small piece of wood in the shape of a circle or heart. Then weave string around the nails to create a piece of string art for her office or bedroom.

15. Write out verses or prayers for her on small pieces of paper. Roll up the prayers and put them in a small jar or box.

16. A pretty journal, fun pens and a new devotional, such as Graceland or Beholding and Becoming, by Ruth Chou Simons, would be a blessing to any woman.

17. Go to a ceramic café and paint something for her.

18. Splurge a little! The Starfish Project and Able both have beautiful jewelry and other products she would love, and your purchase helps women who have escaped sex trafficking and exploitation.

19. Mother’s Day can be hectic with things like church, brunch or family gatherings. Celebrate her on a day when life isn’t quite as busy.

20. Instead of flowers, which don’t live forever, buy mom a new plant that will last for years to come.

Still unsure what to do? Ask her! What would make her feel appreciated and loved? What sounds fun or relaxing? Remember the goal isn’t creating a perfect gift or experience; it’s to show love and appreciation for all she has sacrificed and done.
