Introducing the new Rock-Solid Volunteers! Always Have Enough Help for Your Ministry

How do you keep volunteers engaged? For 20 years, Larry Fowler, Awana Executive Director of Global Training, has led Bible studies and workshops around this common question. In the new Rock-Solid Volunteers, he shares seven effective solutions found in the Book of Nehemiah.

How can ministries relate to the experiences of Nehemiah?
Retaining volunteers is an even bigger issue for ministries than recruitment. Nehemiah recruited volunteers to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, but halfway through everybody was ready to quit. The first part of Rock-Solid Volunteers is about the problems Nehemiah faced. The main portion covers seven principles that he used to motivate his workers to finish the wall.

Can you give an example?
Nehemiah arranged workers by families. I often ask commanders: “Think of a family that is involved in ministry together. Do you worry about them being back next year as Awana leaders?” They say, “No.” So a principle there is that it’s a lot more motivating to be in the same ministry as a family member.

Who was your audience for Rock-Solid Volunteers?
A lot of the illustrations and applications are about children’s ministry. But this book will apply to any leader working with volunteers.
