A Harvest Awaits in West Africa

Djaba Nyakotey Djaba Nyakotey bounced from profession to profession in Ghana searching for his calling. He taught school, managed a construction firm, trained stockbrokers, practiced law and pastored a church in the city of Accra.

Djaba's first and only pastorate brought him into contact with a ministry that soon became his life's passion. In two years, attendance at the Awana program at his church grew from 45 children to 350. When 800 youngsters, many of them unchurched, took part in an Awana Olympic meet, Djaba's eyes were opened to God's call. In 1989 he was named Awana missionary to Ghana.

West Africa Today he is Awana regional coordinator for all of West Africa. Djaba's region hungers for Christ. More than 220 churches in nine countries offer Awana. But the cry for additional clubs is deafening. In Nigeria alone, Djaba estimates that 10,000 churches could run clubs if the resources and manpower were available. Djaba faces a daunting task - ministering in one of the poorest regions of the world. But he is determined to deliver Awana to as many churches as he can. "The Lord keeps me motivated. Awana will someday transform West Africa," he says.
